Holly Small

Designer

I trained as a graphic designer to gain a better understanding of design, necessary requirements to confidently enter the creative industry and to tackle a broad range of topics that lead to projects that target both a young and mature audience.

My key skill is versatility; this ability allows me to find the best means to visually communicate my projects’ purpose. Examples of work include a dissection rat toy, which used textiles and illustration for an interactive and educational outcome based on the Grant Museum of Zoology’s Ordinary Animals exhibition around dissection and anatomy. Expanding on the toy with packaging and guides showing children that all mammals are the same on the inside as well as simplify the function of each organ, made this broad subject easy to see, read and understand. My goal was to engage and educate which I believe is key to any project aimed towards a young target audience.

When designing for mature audiences the intent is to inform and provoke thought, an example would be my narrative photography project where I explored diversity; with the subject of my grandfather who grew up in India, through colonial Britain. Suffering greatly for his background and skin colour in his youth, this oral history based subject explored themes of identity, diversity, racism and bullying, both visually and through authentic audio. Proposed as a wider campaign, with a platform on sharing stories in local listening spaces, a workshop leads to a community building exercise. Creating a cycle of listening, conversation, inspiration and sharing in art based therapy that joins a community through expression.

My wider goal is bridging the gap between older and younger, by improving the relationship between these generations it can connect them, creating community through communication. A minor target in my photography, but a concept that was expanded upon with a teddy bear for parents and children, that’s created with 100% recycled fabric and personalised, through a designed behaviour trait. With a simplified colour coded pattern and instructions parents and children can bond through crafting with simplified means and materials.

Recognising I’m able to create work with adaptable visual language, I developed this ability through exploration and expansion of skills by testing my ideas with prototypes, illustration or writing poetry for narrative. Problem solving or crafting a response to an event/story is a challenge I thrive on, tending to react emotionally, as I find what moves me can become essential to motivate a project.

My responsibility as a designer varies depending on context, but what is essential throughout is the extended process of deep research before starting, ensuring my work is well informed allowing its full impact to reach the viewer. With a tendency to visually display information through graphics could place my work on prints, packaging, posters, or in galleries for exhibitions.

And it’s this mixed bag of options that offer
high opportunities.

In my spare time, I enjoy looking at companies such as Ohh Deer and Jolly Awesome for designs on greeting cards, prints and other accessories. Viewing printed illustrative work inspired me to consider pursuing an illustrative career. However, I decided not to limit myself as I enjoy designing in multimedia which can be seen in the variety of my projects, where I jump between experimentation with text and imagery, textiles, stop motion, print, publications and more.

I will continue to experiment and produce multimedia work that communicates something, whether it be for educational purposes, thought provoking, storytelling or just for expressing myself. I hope people will see and enjoy my work as...
